Blue Shelby Replica by Jamal

Mr.Jamal just got delivery of a 1966 V8 Ford Mustang. The car is a work-in-progress and will undergo detailed restoration here in Abu Dhabi. Stay tuned for more pictures of the car as the restoration take place.
Expected completion time frame: 1 month!

WEEK I
The mustang was completely stripped and all metal work repair started immediately on the car. There were some areas of rust in the car (typical in classic mustangs). These areas were cut out and new sheet metal was welded in and smoothed. Some people opt for putting bondo on rusted metal. This is a temporary fix as the rust will start showing again and spread after some time and. Rule of thumb: ELIMINATE ALL RUST WHILE YOU CAN.

After repairing all sheet metal the mustang was sanded down to bare metal. This is a necessary step to ensure that there is no further rust on the car and will help in finding any pre-existing bondo on the car. Once completely stripped down to bare metal, further metal work was needed to ensure that there are no defects in the metal. Primer was also laid out on the car to prep it for paint.

The underside was also repaired. We had to replace the floor pans since they had some rust on them. The whole under side of the mustang was repaired where needed and they sprayed with anti-rust material to prevent future rust formation. The mustang’s underside now looks in as new condition.

WEEK II

The mustang was then sprayed with primer and paint prep material to get it ready for paint. The Shelby hood scoop was added on the bonnet and was smoothed on the edges to make it appear as part of the hood.

The next step before paint is to make sure that the car is mechanically sound. All brakes hardware was replaced, new brake shoes installed as well as a brand new brake booster. Other parts installed in the engine were a timing chain, fuel pump and filter, oil pump and filter, distributer, alternator, ignition coil, voltage regulator, starter relay, and Carburetor, along with complete engine gaskets replacement. These are only a FEW of the parts that were installed. I will add an all inclusive parts list once completed.

Engine work is finally on on the way and almost completed. A brand new Edelbrock performer carburator was ordered from the US and our friends at ARAMEX delivered it in record time. New gaskets were installed, along with new chrome valve covers. New ceramic headers were also installed to give some extra horses. New belts, pulleys, fuel pump, oil pump, filters, and basically all parts from the heads up. Radiator was also flushed and cleaned. Engine bay has also been painted.

Extensive engine detail and cleaning will take place once the car is painted.

WEEK III

After being sanded down to a smooth finish, the mustang was finally ready for paint. Since the original color was blue, we had to go for a blue scheme on the car to retain its originality. A special effect blue color which shifts from light blue to dark blue to purple depending on the angle you look at it was chosen. First spray in the paint booth and we started laying out the masking tape for the white lines to be painted.

After the lines were laid out, the mustang was fully sprayed with 3 coats of paint, and then 4 coats of laquer to give it that extra shine. The mustang is finally out of the paint booth after being baked in there for a whole day! Keep in mind the mustang still needs to be sanded, polished, and waxed before the paint is ready to show.

The next day, we started installing all the exterior parts on the mustang. Bumpers, mirrors, door handles, antenna, tail lamps, back up lamps, turn signal lamps, along with several other parts were installed.

WEEK IV

Exhaust system finally arrived from the USA and the mustang was on its way to get the new exhaust installed. After installing the exhaust, we installed a new steering wheel, stereo, speakers, horn and made sure all the lights were working properly before taking the mustang to the upholstrey shop. I chose the offwhite cream leather color for the interior so that it matches the car. A new dash pad also arrived from the USA and it was installed as well. Off to the Police Department for registration!

NEW PICTURES
